It is essential to have these yearly examinations to maintain eye health so that any issues can be detected early. So even if you don’t experience any loss of sight, our friendly experts can help stay on top of your eye health.

Digital eye strain relief

From early morning until late at night we are using all kinds of digital devices, for work and recreation. Think about laptops, tablets, smartphones and televisions. Our eyes are increasingly exposed to the light emitted by the screens of those devices especially as we access most of them at a short distance. Moreover, we are continuously switching between photos, illustrations and text as well as following moving images.

So what can cause digital eye strain?

  • Blue Light - also known as high energy visible light is present in daylight as well as LCD and LED devices. In excessive amounts, it can cause adverse effects.

  • Reduced Blinking Rate - when staring at a screen you blink much less than you normally would - 66% less. This will cause eye to tire and feel dry

  • Repetitive Eye Movement  - from repeating the same eye movement over and over, looking from screen to your keyboard.

  • Uncorrected Vision Problems - can increase the likelihood of digital eye strain.

We provide a number of lens solutions to prevent or diminish digital eye strain, for example anti-fatigue lenses with BlueControl in combination with HOYA’s unsurpassed Diamond Finish anti-reflection coating.

Contact lens fitting

Contact lenses are a viable option for almost anyone who needs vision correction. This included those with astigmatism or who require multi-focal lenses. Contact lenses will provide a crisp, unobstructed field of vision. The examination for contact lenses differs from the exam for glasses as the two are actually quite different.

During the contact lens fitting consultation, one of our optometrists may measure numerous things such as the curve of the cornea and the size of the pupil or even perform a tear film evaluation. A contact lens fitting is essential to determine the correct size of the contact lenses. Improperly fitted contact lenses can be detrimental to your eye health.

We offer a free 30-day supply of trial lenses when you have your check up and fitting at Eye Concepts. Our optometrists will also make suggestions on extended wear or disposable contact lens options and provide you with instruction on how to care for the new lenses. A follow up exam will be scheduled to ensure all is well with the new lenses and that your eyes have adjusted to contact lens wear.

Macula degeneration assessment

The most common reason for age-related poor eyesight is macular degeneration. This essential part of the eye’s anatomy loses its function as we grow older. What is the macular? It’s an area at the back of the eye that plays a significant role in accepting sharp images for the brain to process. Macular degeneration leads to your central vision becoming poorer as we grow older.

We recommend having a macular degeneration assessment when you reach your sixties to help detect changes earlier and open yourself up to more treatment options. We also recommend coming in for regular appointments no matter what age, as this can be a preventative factor against the symptoms of macular degeneration.

In this assessment, your optometrist will be able to create a vision care plan that will maximise your eyesight for longer. Deciding on treatment as early as possible will enhance your quality of life, reduce the risk of falls, and allow you to absorb the world around you clearly. We will also recommend lifestyle changes to help retain your eyesight for longer, such as:

  • Dietary changes

  • Quitting smoking

  • The use of vision-enhancing aides such as glasses and contact lenses

Ortho-k overnight lenses

Otherwise known as orthokeratology, Ortho-K are a form of overnight contact lenses that help to reshape the cornea, through moulding the surface of the eye at night. Ortho-k lenses are a great non-surgical solution for people who experience the struggles of myopia/short sightedness.

Orthokeratology begins its work when placing the Ortho-K lenses into the eyes at night time before going to sleep. Once inserted, the lenses will comfortably sit on the surface of the eye, with minimal discomfort, just like a normal pair of contact lenses. After the lens has reshaped the corena overnight, it will minimise the need for glasses or lenses during the daytime. Since Ortho- K is a carefully designed therapeutic contact lens that helps reshape your eye while you sleep, you’ll wake up with a clear, sharp, and natural vision.

Orthokeratology is a particularly popular treatment used to help children who are showing early signs of myopia/short sightedness and early intervention such as orthokeratology is essential in preventing long term eye sight problems.

Children’s eye health

When it comes to formative and intellectual development, maintaining good children’s eye health is essential. While other senses play an important role too, the eyes are conducive to socialising, reading emotions, and language development.

Unfortunately, young children may assume that their vision is normal. As such, a children’s eye test before they begin school may prevent developmental difficulties resulting from impaired vision. By having their eyes tested by an optometrist regularly in the absence of symptoms, you can catch difficulties at their earliest stages.

We recommend that your child should have their eyes tested from the age of 3, and every 2-3 years as they go through school. We do this so we they can avoid difficulties at school and in life such as:

  • Being unable to read the board at school

  • A lack of proprioception when participating in sports

  • Struggling to read class texts

  • Detecting eye issues earlier in life such as myopia or short sightedness
