PROTECTING YOUR EYES FROM BLUE LIGHT
Digital Eye Strain Relief & Symptoms
From early morning until late at night we are using all kinds of digital devices, for work as well as for recreation. Think about laptops, tablets, smartphones and televisions. As we access most of these devices at a short distance, our eyes are increasingly exposed to the light emitted by the screens of those devices. Moreover, this requires our eyes to switch continuously between photos, illustrations and text or follow moving images.
The Cause of Digital Eye Strain
Blue Light
LCD and LED computer and television screens, smartphones, tablets and GPS devices all emit blue light, also known as high energy visible light. As the quality of such screens improves continuously, their blue light emission is increasing. Although blue light in itself is a natural phenomenon – it is present in daylight and helps us to stay awake – excessive amounts can have an adverse effect and cause eye strain and fatigue.
Reduced Blinking Rate
When a person stares at a screen for an extended period of time, they blink much less than they normally would, 66 percent less. This will cause eyes to feel tired and dry.
Repetitive Eye Movement
When working in front of a computer screen, the eyes repeat the same movement over and over. This is quite similar to carpal tunnel syndrome. A person working at a computer will look at the screen, then down at a keyboard, then back to the screen. The screen adds flicker, contrast, and glare, causing the eye muscles to work harder.
Uncorrected Vision Problems
Uncorrected vision problems, such as long-sightedness, inadequate eye coordination, and astigmatism can increase the likelihood of digital eye strain. If these problems are not addressed, the eye strain will recur or continue, and the symptoms can worsen.
The Symptoms
Unfortunately, 50-90 percent of people who work with computers have at least some of the symptoms of digital eye strain. Symptoms include more than dry, tired eyes.
Eye watering
Blurred or double vision
Neck or shoulder pain
Light sensitivity
Aching eyes
Headaches
