From myopia control with Ortho-K lenses to glasses or contact lenses and more – our experienced optometrists can provide you with excellent service, no matter what stage of life you're at. Continue reading below as we cover the services we offer, including Ortho-K lenses to correct myopia progression.
Ortho-K Overnight Lenses
Ortho-K, or Orthokeratology, is an overnight vision correction that is a way of controlling myopia progression by shaping the front surface of your eye, the cornea. Ortho-K is a non-surgical alternative to wearing daytime contact lenses or laser surgery, as you wear the Ortho-k lenses in your sleep to help correct your vision during the day. We're here for all your Ortho-K Melbourne questions and myopia needs, but let us delve into this type of myopia control treatment further first.
What is Myopia?
Myopia is a common vision condition also known as nearsightedness or short sightedness, in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. Myopia is different to long sightedness, which is when objects nearby are out of focus. High myopia occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, affecting your central vision and the progression of myopia. Myopic macular degeneration is a type of macular degeneration that occurs in people with high myopia. Another indicator of myopia progression is a change in axial length.
There is also a difference between myopia and astigmatism. Both these conditions have a specific refractive error, myopia is blurred vision at long distances, whereas people who have astigmatism will suffer blurred vision at any distance.
How Ortho-K lenses work.
Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is an advanced form of contact lens therapy for myopia that works to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep during night time. Changing the corneal shape of your eye through Ortho-K contact lenses is a non invasive and completely reversible way to slow the progression of myopia. Ortho-K treatment results in clear vision all day and the slowing down of myopia progression, allowing you to going about your daily routine and activities without wearing contact lenses or glasses.
OK lenses have a unique design for myopia control, which generates gentle pressure in the thin layer of tears under the contact lens, called the corneal epithelium, which results in clear vision during the day. And while patients' cornea will revert to its original shape during their waking hours, orthokeratology treatment has shown to slow down the progression of myopia, all while the patients sleep with Ortho-k lenses.
Who Ortho-K is for.
Ortho-K lenses are a safe corneal refractive therapy that is suitable for both children and adults with myopia (short sightedness). Ortho-K is especially beneficial for children and teenagers who have large increases in myopia every year. In addition to eliminating the need for glasses or contacts during the day, Ortho-K lenses may even decrease or stop the rate of myopic progression. With Ortho-K, results are often dramatic and swift, with noticeable results after the first night. Orthokeratology lenses can offer refractive stability for peripheral vision as well.
Ortho-K lenses are an excellent option for patients with short sightedness who want to be free of their spectacles but struggle to wear contact lenses during the day, and do not want to take the risks associated with surgery. Ortho-K lenses are an effective treatment for myopia control that's is particularly popular with active children and young patients. They often prefer this type of Ortho-K lens wear over having to wear glasses, especially considering it even holds chances to slow down the progression of their near sightedness with myopia control.
Is Ortho-K safe for children? Ortho-K lenses are as safe as any other contact lens and your optometrist will be able to find out if Ortho-K lenses are a suitable treatment option for your child, if they suffer from myopia.
What to expect from Ortho-K treatment.
If you're interested in Ortho-K lenses to look after you or your child's eyesight, we understand you'd be curious what to expect from this lens treatment and how your optometrists in Melbourne can help.
During your initial consultation, your friendly optometrist will accurately measure the exact shape of your eye; from axial length to cornea and more. to see if Ortho-K is necessary. Your treatment options will vary depending on a multitude of factors, which your optometrist will explain to you too.
Bulk Billing Eye-Test
To provide the best possible care for vision quality and the eye health of our Melbourne community, we offer bulk-billed eye tests. That means all Medicare recipients are eligible to receive standard eye examinations with no out of pocket expenses and without having to file paperwork for reimbursement.
For those who are not covered under Medicare for a bulk billed eye test, some health insurance providers may cover the cost, otherwise our eye tests are available for a small fee.
Digital Eye Strain Relief
On average, people of working age in Australia now spend over 6 hours a day staring at screens, and it's to no surprise this could impact our eyes. Blue light filters through the cornea and reaches the retina. Eye strain is the physical discomfort felt after two or more hours in front of a digital screen and is associated with staring at a close to mid-range fixed distance.
When your eyes look at a fixed distance for long periods of time, it puts an immense strain on your eye muscles. Spending significant amounts of time staring at screens also causes our blink rates to reduce, which can result in dry eyes and eye irritation. At Eye Concepts Melbourne we have a number of solutions that can help prevent digital eye strain, for example using blue filtered glasses.
Contact Lens Fitting
Contact lenses are a fantastic alternative to spectacles particularly for active people, and for those who simply prefer wearing lenses over glasses. With recent advances in design technology, contact lenses are now more comfortable, easier to care for and are more affordable.
There are many different types of contact lenses on the market and you may be unsure what type of lens suits your eyes and your lifestyle best. You or your child may also need treatment for myopia with Ortho-K lenses. That's where our friendly optometrists come in. During a Contact Lens Fitting, they can help you choose a contact lens system that is suited specifically to you. A contact lens fitting is suitable for anyone who may need vision correction.
At Eye Concepts, we supply a wide range of top quality contact lenses from leading brands. Our optometrists can help you find a lens that will suit your lifestyle and budget.
Macular Degeneration Assessment
Macular degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration, is an eye disease that may get worse over time as a result of eyesight deterioration. In Australia, it’s the leading cause of severe, permanent vision loss in people over age 60. Another form of macular degeneration, called Stargardt disease or juvenile macular degeneration, affects children and young adults.
This happens when the small central portion of your retina, called the macula, wears down. The retina is the light-sensing nerve tissue at the back of your eye that enables us to see clearly and appreciate colour. It usually doesn’t cause blindness but might cause severe vision problems.
Having an assessment as early as possible when you reach your 60s is likely to give you more treatment options if needed, so make sure to see our friendly experts when these check-ups are relevant to you.
Children’s Eye Health
Sight is one of the most important senses for a kid’s educational, physical and social development. With many children suffering from an undetected vision problem including myopic progression, it’s important to be aware of the signs to give every child the best chance of reaching their full potential.
Many children aren’t aware they have a vision problem such as myopia that can be fixed with Ortho-K, and will generally try to adapt, without knowing they could see better. As a parent, you’re the best person to help find the signs in your child. Beyond familiarising yourself with the signs, optometrists recommend children have a full eye examination before starting school and regularly as they progress through primary and secondary school. Of course, our friendly experts are happy to help your child and have ample experience doing so.
