HOW MANY HOURS A DAY CAN YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES?

Daily lenses. These are disposable lenses after one day. They don’t require cleaning or storing.

Fortnightly/ Monthly Lenses. These need to be removed every night, cleaned and stored in contact lens solution recommended by your optometrist.

Here are two types of lenses with different wearing time:

• Daily wear - should be removed every night and cleaned. Most people prefer wearing daily lenses that can be disposed of and don’t require any cleaning or maintenance.

• Fortnightly/Monthly wear - These lenses are designed for regular contact lens wearers, allowing them to wear the same pair of lenses for up to 2 weeks or one month depending on the design. Some factors may also determine how long you can keep your lenses on: your condition, work environment, and sensitivity.

• Silicone Hydrogel Lenses are the most popular in the US. This is an advanced type of lenses which are softer and more porous than regular hydrogel lenses, which allows more oxygen to the cornea.

• Soft Lenses are made of water-containing plastics called hydrogels. These are thin and can conform to the surface of the eye. 

• Hybrid Contacts are designed for comfort. These have a rigid gas permeable central zone, with a surrounding hydrogel material. However, they may be more challenging to fit and are more expensive compared to silicone hydrogel lenses.

• Gas Permeable (GP) Lenses fit closer to the eye because they are permeable to oxygen. These lenses can provide sharper vision compared to silicone hydrogel contact, especially for people with astigmatism. 

• PMMA Lenses are made of a material called Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), a transparent rigid plastic material. However, these ‘hard-contacts’ are hardly used nowadays and have been replaced with GP Lenses for improved comfort and a better flow of oxygen to the eye.
