What can I expect from an eye exam?

Depending on your needs and condition, your optometrist will conduct a variety of tests or procedures and use various tools to examine your eyes. Here are the usual types of eye exam you should expect:

Visual Acuity Test

This is done to assess the sharpness of your vision and for near vision measurement. It is conducted using an eye chart test. You will be asked to read letters off the chart from a distance. The optometrist then will be able to determine the level of correction that will allow you to see clearly and to determine if you will need glasses or contact lenses.

Visual Field/Cover Test

To test your peripheral vision, cover tests are designed to check the alignment of your eyes. The optometrist will cover one eye at a time and ask you to fixate the other on a small object across the room.

Tonometry/Glaucoma Test

Checking the pressure ion, your eye is also important to evaluate your risk for glaucoma. The optometrist will make use of an instrument called the non-contact tonometer. You will be asked to put your chin on the machine’s chin rest, and the specialist will use the device to blow a small puff of air onto your eye gently.

Pupil Dilation
